Job Objective:

Provides safety and security services, protecting customers, employees, and property by enforcing the laws of the State of California and the policies of the Antelope Valley Hospital under the direction of lead officers, supervisors, and the Director of Safety and Security.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

A. Actively participates in and implements the security management program

1. Monitors hospital CCTV system, alarm systems, and communication equipment, dispatching staff as needed

2. Implements hospital access control procedures at all hospital entrances

3. Responds to emerg.ency calls, making initial assessments of situations using tact, diplomacy, and judgment

4. Resolves violent and potentially violent situations

5. Intervenes with individuals attempting to impose physical harm to themselves or who are posing a threat to others or to hospital property

6. Provides security and protection to Hospital patients, visitors, employees and customers by patrolling areas

7. Completes necessary departmental forms, reports, and logs in a timely and detailed manner

B. Enforces the laws of the State of California and the policies and procedures of the Hospital

C. Greets all customers, offering assistance as needed

D. Maintains and wears complete and neat uniform

E. Observes and reports faulty and/or unsafe equipment including fire and safety related items

F. Carries out safety and infection control procedures to ensure customer and employee safety

G. Supports and participates in the Hospital's performance improvement process

Education and Experience:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent


  • 1 year of hospital security or related experience

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid California driver's license
  • Current California Guard Card
  • Valid First Aid and CPR card maintained at all times
  • Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) designation from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (lAHSS) within 90 days of hire
  • Certified Advanced Healthcare Security Officer (CAHSO) designation from IAHSS within 180 days of hire
  • Nonviolent Crisis intervention 8 hour course from the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) within 90 days of hire and recertification annually
  • Health Stream coursework within 60 days of hire on:
  •  Workplace Violence
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS)
  • Emergency Management

Key Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Work performed in a combination of the interior of a hospital building and outdoors under potentially stressful and emotional conditions.
  • Stand or walk or sit or a combination thereof for 8 hours.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Able to move vigorously as needed.
  • Able to grip with both hands.
  • Able to bend and reach without limitations.

 Additional Information

Weekend and/or Holiday Rotation may be required.
Rotating Shifts may be required.
