Job Objective: The Nursing Technician provides general nursing care of patients within a nursing unit guided by the policies and procedures of the hospital under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Essential Duties:

  • A. Nursing Care
  • 1. Provides accurate observations of patient needs. Reports patient symptoms and needs requiring attention to the professional nurse.
  • a) Observes and reports IV infiltration and improper IV flow rate.
  • b) Checks circulation
  • c) Maintains appropriate body alignment
  • d) High degree of involvement with patients and family members
  • 2. Assists in providing general routine nursing care based on a Registered Nurse's assessment and care plan, adhering to accepted policies and procedures.
  • a) Performs the following nursing care tasks:
  • Basic hygiene including complete and partial baths and showers.
  • Makes occupied and unoccupied bed.
  • Provides oral care.
  • Provides hair care.
  • Assists with elimination.
  • Assists with and feeds patients as necessary.
  • Patient movement including turning every 2 hours, positioning in bed and assisting to chair.
  • Patient transportation by gurney, wheelchair or bed.
  • Range of motion exercises.
  • Removal and application of care management restraints. Peri care
  • Foley Catheter care.
  • Discharging patients.
  • Replacing batteries in telemetry boxes as requested Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Prevention of skin breakdown.
  • b. Performs additional nursing care tasks including the following:
  • Vital signs (manual and machine), including pain level. a Rounding on patients to assess safety and needs.
  • Assisting in the facilitation of a quiet environment.
  • Assisting with Fall Precautions.
  • Procedures related to elimination including colostomy care, urostomy care and appliance change.
  • Ambulation with assistive devices such as crutches, walkers or gait belts.
  • Care of tubes and drains including Jackson Pratt, hemovac, and pleurovac.
  • Use of equipment including scales, thrombo guards and traction. Cast care.
  • Surgical skin preparation.
  • Specimen collection including urine, stool and sputum.
  • Care for stage 1 pressure ulcers.
  • Transports patients when required.
  • Performs errands when assigned to facilitate unit work flow; i.e. Transports specimens to lab, acts as messenger to various departments ect.
  • Operates technical equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Demonstrates knowledge regarding special needs and behaviors of age specific groups.
  • B. Documentation.
  • 1. Demonstrates knowledge and use of hospital written resources.
  • a. Charts accurately on HTR flow sheet, restraint flow sheet, belongings list and patient care plan.
  • b. Able to complete unlicensed portion of nursing assessment
  • 2. Demonstrates knowledge of legal aspects of care, knowledge of legal documents pertinent to unit/area of care.
  • C. Computer operation
  • 1. Ability to input essential orders in hospital computer system.


Skills and Abilities:

  • Skills obtained through completion of a basic nursing aide course or the basic nursing modules in the Registered Nursing or Licensed Vocational nursing programs at a community college, and/or one-year experience in an acute care or skilled nursing facility
  • Ability to learn required computer skills within 6 months of employment

    • Skill and ability to follow the established Customer Service Expectations and Standards.


    Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support for Healthcare Workers
  • Current CNA may be required in area of care.
  • Maintenance of annual skills and Joint Commission requirements including age specific competencies.

    Education and Experience 

  • High School Graduate or GED required.

    Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  •  • Work often performed under stressful, emotional and physical conditions



  • May be exposed to contaminated instruments that may cause infections, burns, or cuts

    • May also be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation.

  • A detailed description of the physical requirements of this job is maintained in the Occupational Health Department.

  •  Additional Information

    Weekend and/or Holiday Rotation may be required.
